The noble houses of Xeilias have a tradition called Velthari – the "Red Requital" – a rite where the heir must atone for familial failure through ceremonial self-sacrifice.
It's rare, almost mythic now, but Zephyros had studied the rite as a child, knowing one day it might fall on him.
